- February 12: a blinding blizzard pospones a German attack to Verdun.[9]
- February 21: the Germans attack the German near Verdun overwhelming the French, pushing them deep into their lines.[9] The Battle of Verdun begins.[10][4]

- The Joneses visit relatives in New Mexico. Indy and his cousin Frank go to Mexico. Indy is kidnapped by, and eventually joins, the Villistas where he meets Remy Baudouin; Demetrios, at the time known as "Claw", dies during the explosion at his home.[11]
- March 9: Pancho Villa's men raids Columbus, New Mexico.[12]
- March 15: Indy writes an entry on his journal regarding his involment in the Mexican Revolution.[13]
- Portugal joins World War I.[14]
- Charles de Gaulle is wounded at the Battle of Verdun and captured by the Germans.[10]
- April
- Indy and Remy stow away on a steamer from the Mexican port of Veracruz heading for Ireland so they can get to London to join the war.[15]
- April 24: Indy flirts with Maggie Lemass and witnesses the Easter Rebellion.[16]
- Easter Rebellion in Ireland lasts one week.[4]
- Lafayette Escadrille is officially formed.[10]
- May
- In London Indy enlists in the Belgian Army under the name "Henri Defense" along with Remy. During their stay Remy marries Suzette Chambin and Indy falls in love with Vicky Prentiss. Together he and Vicky visit Miss Seymour in Oxford.[17]
- Mata Hari is enlisted as a spy for Germany.[18]
- A soldier later found at Verdun starts figthing on the frontlines.[19]
- May 20: The Saturday Evening Post publishes its first cover by Norman Rockwell.[20][10]
- May 31: Battle of Jutland. This is the only major naval battle of the war between Great Britain and Germany.[4]
- June 4: Brusilov offensive. Russian attack ultimately fails.[4]
- June 5: Arab revolt against Turkey begins at Medina.[4] They capture several cities on the Red Sea.[21]

- August:
- Indy's Belgian company is devastated in Flanders and all their officers die. Indy as corporal is in charge.[22]
- Indy's company joins the French and fight at the Battle of the Somme. After capturing Chateau La Maisonette the Germans counterattack[22] and Indy is taken to a prisoner of war camp disguised as "Pierre Blanc". After an escape attempt, Indy is transferred to Dusterstadt but manages to escape with Charles de Gaulle.[23]
- August 19: Henry Jones attends a Philadelphia conference where he is ridiculed by Carruthers and others for his pursuit of the Holy Grail.[24]
- September: Indy serves as a courier near Verdun and reunites with Remy. After refusing to deliver orders for a suicide attack against the "Big Bertha", he is demoted back to the trenches.[25]
- October:
- Jacques Levi, a friend of the French Minister of War, manages to bring Indy and Remy in Paris. There Indy has an affair with Mata Hari.[26]
- Thomas Edward Lawrence begins partecipation in the Arab revolt.[10]
- October 24: Petain, Nivelle and Mangin finally retake Fort Douaumont after a long and determined campaign.[27]
- October-December: Jones and Baudouin are transferred to Africa and are promoted to lieutenants. On their way to their unit at Lake Victoria they are lost and end up to "The Old and the Bold" battalion. Jones helps Frederick Selous discover the Phantom Train and afterwards kidnap Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, who is finally rescued by Margaret Trappe.[28]
- November 18: Battle of the Somme ends. More than one million are killed. Massive Allied defeat. Tanks are introduced by the British.[4]
- November 28: Germany begins aerial raids on Great Britain.[4]
- December:
- General Henri Philippe Pétain successfully defends Verdun against German attack.[10]
- In India Muslim and Hindu leaders agree to a pact outlining a joint program of national demands, including increased representation of Muslims on all elective legislative councils.[29]
- Jones and Baudouin serve in a battle in German East Africa. Jones' heroics earn him a promotion to captain. The two are then sent in an expedition under Major Boucher across the Belgian Congo to Port-Gentil to retrieve a wayward shipment of arms, and pick up an Ubangi orphan.[30]
- December 3: Indy writes a letter to Thomas Edward Lawrence while in Africa.[30]
- December 6: Bucharest is captured and the remainder of Romania soon falls under the control of the Triple Alliance.[4]
- December 18:[4] The Battle of Verdun ends.[10]
