- August 8: Russia invades Manchuria when Japan still refuses to surrender.[1]
- August 9: Three days after the bombing of Hiroshima, the Rock's Car drops "Fat Man" on Nagasaki. Half of the city is destroyed and 70,000 are killed.[1]
