- Harold Oxley finds the Crystal Skull of Akator in Nazca and travels to Akator to return the skull to the Temple of Akator. Unable to enter the temple, he returns to Nazca and hides the skull again. Appearing to have lost his mind, he is taken to a Nazca sanatorium from where he is picked up by Soviet Special Forces.[2]
- Marion Ravenwood receives a letter from Oxley which makes her believe that he is mentally disturbed, and she travels to Peru to look after him. She gets caught by the Soviet Special Forces as well, but they let her escape long enough so that she can send a letter together with a new crypted message by Oxley to her son Mutt Williams. She is then recaptured.[2]
