A British Tar is a song from the Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore, written in 1878.

Sallah was familiar with the tune and lyrics, and after being kissed goodbye by Marion Ravenwood at the Cairo Docks in 1936, he began loudly singing the song and miming the tune's actions, as he strolled from the Bantu Wind back home.
