Abu was the apprentice of Imam on the outskirts of Cairo in Egypt in 1936. He provided American archaeologist Indiana Jones and Egyptian excavator Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir with food when they visited the Imam that year.

Biography[]

In 1936, Abu was studying under Imam as his apprentice in Cairo, Egypt.[1] That year, Imam was visited by American archaeologist Indiana Jones and Egyptian excavator Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir who had come seeking answers about the headpiece to the Staff of Ra.[2]

Imam's apprentice unwittingly supplied Jones with a bowl of tainted dates, poisoned by an assassin while Abu was away attending to other duties. On his return he briefly caught sight of the man in the doorway but, oblivious of what he had done, supplied the food regardless,[2] bemused by Jones' theatrics of flicking a date into the air instead of simply just eating it.[1] However, this habit ultimately saved Jones as it gave Sallah enough time to catch the date after he noticed that a Capuchin monkey, who belonged to the assassin and was spying on Jones, was a victim of the poisoned fruit.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Abu was played by Kiran Shah in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
