"He has his mother's charm but none of the dignity befitting a Caesar."
Claudius on Nero[src]

Agrippina was the mother (and advisor) of Emperor Nero, one of the sovereigns of Imperial Rome as the adoptive heir of her husband Claudius.

Biography[]

Agrippina had a son named Nero before marrying Emperor Claudius. However, eventually, Claudius saw his marriage to Agrippina as a "grievous error", remarking that she had gathered enough spies to monitor his every move. He described Agrippina in his diary as having a charm that her son inherited, being forced to write his thoughts on his wife in private. Once he became ruler himself, Nero wrote to a loyal friend of his how Agrippina's machinations were ever present, given how those in his court who gained the slightest influence without her approval mysteriously succumbed to sudden ailments–much like the nightly stomach pains that had blighted Claudius in the end–or were found fallen upon their own daggers, but he aimed to surpass his mother in all her methods, proclaiming that the day was approaching when he could truly reign as an emperor out from under Agrippina's shadow over his throne.[1]
