Alice B. Toklas was an American and life partner of writer Gertrude Stein. On her first day in Paris in 1907, she met Stein, and eventually moved in with her. They hosted a salon in Paris which attracted artists and writers such as Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway. Toklas was the titular character in Stein's The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, which was more an autobiography of Stein. After Stein's death, Toklas wrote her own literary memoir/cookbook and her own autobiography.

In September 1908, Toklas was a guest at a party thrown by Picasso in the upstairs of Le Lapin Agile for Henri Rousseau. She and Stein were discussing art with the dealer, Kahnweiler, when Fernande Olivier introduced them to two young Americans, Indiana Jones and Norman Rockwell.
