Four statues of Anubis stood as guardians of the Ark of the Covenant inside the Well of Souls at Tanis. They were designed to support the roof, placed near the entrance to the Well.[1]
One was knocked over in 1936 to provide an escape route for archaeologist Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood when they were trapped inside by Nazis.[1]
