Arizona is one of the United States of America. Located in the Southwest, much of Arizona is arid desert land. On the border with Mexico, its neighboring states include New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and California. Several Native American tribes live in the state, including the Navajo, Apache and Hopi. The land was explored by Spanish explorers and missionaries and became part of New Spain. Mexico ceded the bulk of the territory to the United States in 1848, and sold the southern portion to the US in 1850. In the late 1800s, many settlers came to the area for mining, farming or ranching, sometimes conflicting with the local Native Americans. The Arizona territory eventually was divided and became the states of Arizona and New Mexico in 1912.

In 1936, Indiana Jones led his Archaeology 223 students from Marshall College on a field trip to the state to study Hopi Indian artifacts when he discovered Busby Giles had destroyed several in a condemned cave to make way for a criminal safehouse.
