The Association of American Medievalists was an organization of American scholars of medieval history.

In 1900, the association held a conference in Massachusetts, in which Professor Henry Jones, Sr. presented a paper on his search for the Holy Grail. Jones wrote in his journal on the way home that his paper was greeted with embarrassment, skepticism and ridicule as his colleagues all believed that the Holy Grail was not real.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

It is likely that the conference was held in Boston, a city with strong academic traditions, and Jones' presence in western Massachusetts when he wrote his journal entry is simply due to being aboard a train headed towards home (likely Princeton) at this time.
