Big Short Round was a baby elephant that in 1935 carried Short Round from Mayapore village to Pankot Palace.

Biography[]

A elephant calf was originally part of a small herd of elephants owned by the inhabitants of Mayapore, a village in the Pankot Province which had been raided by the Thuggees. When American archeologist Indiana Jones and his companions Willie Scott and Short Round arrived at the village, they were sent to Pankot Palace on elephants to rescue their children and their Shiva Linga.[1] The elephants were actually meant to be sold[2] and used as a temporary transportation until Pankot.[1]

In preparation of the trip Short Round mounted the baby elephant[3] and began befriend him,[1] giving him the nicknamed of "Big Short Round". Because of their bond, Short Round suspected that the elephant could be the reincarnated form of his deceased brother Chu.[2] The elephant brougth Indy's briefcase with his neck.[1]

Big Short Round and his namesake went their separate ways at Pankot,[1] wondering why his "brother" was abandoning him.[2] He gave one last sad look of loss at the baby elephant, the closest thing to a pet that Short Round had ever had.[4] Parting from the beloved animal was somewhat difficult, but Shorty knew that that was kid's stuff, as he was determined to be Indy's number one bodyguard.[5]

The two friends were eventually reunited after Short Round, Willie Scott and Indiana Jones returned to Mayapore with the kidnapped children.[1] The village elephant herdsman had lead back the animals he hadn't been able to sell, including the baby elephant. The eyes of the elephant at the end of the line lit up when they met Short Round's eyes. With his arms wrapped as far as they could go around the baby elephant's neck. Short Round thugth it was the luckiest day of his life.[4] There during Scott and Jones' embrace, Big Short Round sprayed the pair with water from his trunk, much to Shorty's amusement.[1] A drawing of the baby elephant would later be included in Indiana Jones' journal.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

In LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, only two elephants are used by Indiana Jones and his companions to travel to Pankot Palace. In the last cutscene based on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Big Short Round is played by an adult elephant instead of a baby elephant.[7]
