The Book of Common Prayer is a book containing the prayers and structure of regular worship services in the Anglican (or Episcopal) church, which is one denomination of Christianity. Written in English, many phrases from it have passed into the general body of cultural literacy.
In 1957, a copy of the wedding liturgy found in the Book of Common Prayer was needed for the wedding ceremony of Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood. Dean Charles Stanforth dashed back to his office, and pulled a copy from his desk drawer and returned to the wedding, giving the book to the Minister.
Behind the scenes[]
Stanforth brings a Book of Common Prayer to the wedding in the film version of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In the novel, he brings the Brody family Bible instead.
