C. P. Smythe was a famous British archaeologist and rival of Indiana Jones. Although the adventurer had several high profile finds that secured him a familiar on-screen presence in newsreels for US audiences, Smythe could be lethal in his pursuit of fortune and glory which made him a dangerous opponent for Jones who knew the full extent of his nature.
At some point in their respective careers, Smythe and Jones competed against each other to acquire an ancient Congolese elephant mask.
Behind the scenes[]
In one of the branching storylines in the Indiana Jones and the Mask of the Elephant gamebook, Smythe is crushed to death by an elephant while fighting Indiana Jones for control of a machine gun.
