California is one of the United States of America, located on the west coast of the country, and touching the Pacific Ocean. Its largest city is Los Angeles, located on the coast in the southern part of the state, while another major city is San Francisco, located on the coast in the central part of California. The state covers a variety of landforms including some of the tallest mountains in the United States, deserts, agriculturally-rich farmland, and forests.

California was home to different indigenous peoples when it was colonized by Spanish settlers who established religious missions, forts, and ranches in the 1700s. Americans began settling the central parts of the state in the early 1800s, and the land was ceded to the United States after its victory over Mexico in 1846. Discovery of gold in the Sacramento area in 1848 prompted a gold rush the following year, which eventually led to statehood in 1850. By the twentieth century, California had developed major agricultural centers in the Central Valley and southern parts of the state. Industry was focused in the major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, which also served as gateways to commerce and immigrants from around the world.

Adventures in California

In 1920, Indiana Jones came to Hollywood in Los Angeles as part of a job to rein in director Erich von Stroheim. He ended up as a production assistant and stunt actor in one of John Ford's westerns before returning to his studies at the University of Chicago.

In 1936, Indiana Jones traveled to San Francisco to catch a Pan Am Clipper to take him to Asia to find Abner Ravenwood during his search for the Ark of the Covenant.

In 1939, Jones returned to San Francisco to meet with his friend Archie Tan, who had a clue to the whereabouts of Charles Kingston. When Jones arrived, he had to search Chinatown for Tan, who had been kidnapped by Blind Duck's Tong for Magnus Völler. Jones rescued Tan and retrieved the Jade Sphere, which led him to continue his search for Kingston in Panama.
