Canyonlands is a remote and rugged region of southeastern Utah, United States of America. It is known for its vast desert landscape, sheer-walled canyons, towering mesas and natural rock formations.
History[]
In 1947, archaeologist Indiana Jones was conducting archaeological work in the Canyonlands when his old friend Sophia Hapgood, an agent of CIA, informed him that the Soviets were excavating ruins in Babylon.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Known for its rich geological formations and long history of human habitation—including ancestral Puebloan rock art and dwellings—the area is today protected as Canyonlands National Park, which encompasses more than 330,000 acres divided into distinct districts such as Island in the Sky, The Needles and The Maze.
Canyonlands served as the backdrop for the first level of the LucasArts video game Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.[1]
