The Cathay Hotel was situated in Shanghai, China, in the former British Concession of the International Settlement. The affluent 10-storey building was owned by the Sassoon family with its first floor dedicated to a shopping arcade and the Horse and Hounds Bar.

As with its sister site, the comparatively more conservative Palace Hotel, on the opposite side of Nanking Road, the Cathay Hotel overlooked the northern end of the Bund.

Behind the scenes[]

The Cathay Hotel building still exists as the Fairmont Peace Hotel.

The hotel was the site of the 1941 Japanese occupation of Shanghai during Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Empire of the Sun (1987).
