Christopher Lee (May 27, 1922 – June 7, 2015) was a British actor who played Count Ottokar Graf Czernin in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles episode "Austria, March 1917" (Adventures in the Secret Service).
Known for his role as Count Dracula in numerous Hammer Horror Films releases, he appeared in the James Bond picture The Man with the Golden Gun, made a cameo in Steven Spielberg's 1979 satire 1941 and played Count Dooku in two installments of George Lucas' Star Wars prequels (in addition to voicing the character in The Clone Wars animated film). FRom the 2000s Lee had played supporting roles in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies as Saruman and various Tim Burton films.
According to artist William Stout, Christopher Lee wanted to be cast in Raiders of the Lost Ark as a German officer in one of the prominent roles, with Lee insinuating to Stout and Ron Cobb to persuade Spielberg to cast him in Raiders under the pretext that he was fluent in German, to the point Stout and Cobb felt that Lee and other actors were "driving them nuts".[1] Online discussion has speculated that Cobb's early concept art for Arnold Ernst Toht seems to point out that Lee wanted the Toht role.[2] Interestingly, Spielberg employed a failed 1941 gag he had intended for Lee to perform of pulling out a torture device that was actually a coat hanger and reused it successfully with Ronald Lacey's Major Arnold Ernst Toht.[3]
On June 7, 2015, Lee passed away following respiratory problems and heart failure at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He was 93.
