The Citroën being chased by a Luftwaffe plane.

The Citroën 11 Légère Cabriolet was an automobile used by Indiana Jones and Henry Jones, Senior in 1938.

History

The car was driven by an elderly man, and when it broke down, he began to fix the tire. Before he could reattach the hubcap, it was stolen by the Joneses, who were being pursued by two Luftwaffe Pilatus P-2 fighters. After being strafed by one fighter, they rounded a corner and entered a tunnel. Not expecting the cliff and tunnel, the plane flew into the tunnel, losing its wings. With the flaming fuselage on their tail, the Joneses pulled aside and let the plane pass, amazing its pilot. After it exploded, the Citroën drove through the flaming wreckage. The second fighter dropped a bomb on the road in front of the car, and the vehicle fell into the bomb crater. Unable to continue driving, Indiana Jones hopped out of the car and hurried his father away as the second plane circled around.

Behind the scenes

The car used in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was a mock-up of a convertible built using an anachronistic 1954 Citroën Légère Cabriolet sedan. The car currently resides outside of Disneyland, though in a bad state.

Industrial Light & Magic used a model of the car for tunnel effects shots in the film.
