- "I came to power late in life, yet conducted myself with propriety."
- ―Claudius[src]
Claudius was the emperor of Imperial Rome, the husband of Agrippina and the adoptive father of her son Nero.
Biography[]
Claudius rose up to power over Rome late in his life but, in his own estimation, still took his responsibilities as emperor seriously and expected his adoptive son to do the same, only for Nero to hardly ever be present when duty called much to his disappointment, finding the boy unworthy of the Caesar title and doubting Seneca's wisdom could temper him. However, with his wife Agrippina planting spies to monitor Claudius' every move, he started keeping all of his thoughts secret in his diary. He once wrote that his marriage and the adoption of her son were "grievous errors" before his nightly stomach pains prompted him to ask Xenophon for a remedy. In the end, it was to no avail, as Nero would soon succeed him by 54.[1]
