"Club Nightmare!" is issue 6 of Marvel Comics' The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones comic book series. It was published in March 1983.

Plot summary[]

The grand opening of Marion Ravenwood's Manhattan nightclub, The Raven's Nest, is disrupted by a series of mishaps. Indiana Jones—Ravenwood's silent partner—suspects local gangster Emil Marko is behind the incidents, but rejects the theory after discovering evidence that Marko had abandoned plans to persuade Ravenwood to install casino games at the nightclub. Jones and Ravenwood then turn their attention to Jamal, the club's decorator. Jamal confesses, revealing his scheme to recover black market artifacts he had smuggled into the club disguised as decorations, then destroy evidence of the deed by bombing the club. Jamal's bomb detonates in the struggle that follows, killing him. Jones and Ravenwood narrowly escape, but The Raven's Nest is completely decimated.

Development[]

Howard Chaykin, who wasn't accustomed to do montly products other than a few things "here and there" even for The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones, was approached to pencil the issue, which surprisingly gave him a good time especially doing its cover. While David Michelinie wrote the story for and Louise Simonson edited this issue, it was conceived by Chaykin and Michelinie after having a chat during which Chayken came up with the plot and Michelinie with the dialogue. It was Chaykin who proposed the idea of having Marion Ravenwood hold Emil Marko's Enrico Caruso records as hostage, as he felt that was something typical of his to mess with the material's sensibility. Indiana Jones' weird attire in the issue was also Chaykin's idea, who drew the character the way he felt appropiate in the material's context. Chaykin also drew the "splash" and the sequence of Indy and Marion breaking into Marko's estate, citing the scene where Indy uses alum to distract Marko's dogs as an homage to the Looney Tunes cartoons he watched as a child. He didn't recall if the jazz scene was his idea or Michelinie's.[1]

Continuity[]

In real life, by 1936, Frank Sinatra was still a waiter who rarely made singing performances at bars. Although he was known by that time, he did not yet have the reputation that Marion Ravenwood attributed to him in this story.
