In April 1941, a British army Colonel was begrudgingly placed in charge of the protection of an American excavation in Greece.[1]
The archaeologists had ignored British advice to leave the area due to the advance of the Nazi military and, two weeks later, the colonel forced the team abandon their work when the fighting reached them. He helped transport the archeologists to safety as part of the British retreat by sea.[1]
