Dagwood Bumstead was a fictional character who featured in comic strips of the 1930s. He was especially notorious about his love for rich improvised sandwiches.
When Indiana Jones sneaked into a German U-boat disguised as a Nazi naval officer in 1939, he created a sandwich to tempt a German soldier out of his post. He likened his sandwich as being 'worthy of Dagwood Bumstead'.[1]
