Dubrovnik is a city in Croatia on the coast at the southern end of Dalmatia, on the Adriatic Sea. Once the capital of a free maritime city-state, it was conquered by Napoleon but eventually given to the Habsburgs, who controlled it as part of Austria-Hungary until its dissolution after World War I, and the city became part of Yugoslavia.
In August 1932, Wolfgang S. Staubig was on holiday and visited the city. While at an antiquarian bookstore, he discovered and obtained a seemingly genuine version of The Book of the Spells of Merlin.
