- "I like Ike."
- ―Campaign slogan of Eisenhower, quoted by Indiana Jones[src]
Dwight D. Eisenhower, nicknamed "Ike", was an American general during the Second World War, acting as the first Supreme Allied Commander for Europe. He was also the thirty-fourth President of the United States, serving two terms from January 20, 1953, until 1961. As such, he ended the Korean War, but kept pressure on the Soviet Union, making nuclear weapons developement and the Space Race a priority.
In 1944, Indiana Jones, as a member of the US military, received a form letter from General Eisenhower to inspire American forces shortly before the D-Day offensives to retake Europe for the Allies. He kept this letter in his journal.[1]
Sometime after Eisenhower's inauguration in 1953, Jones collected a first day cover stamp and cachet from the inauguration, and kept it in his journal.[1]
In 1957, while kidnapped by KGB agents inside of Hangar 51, Indiana Jones defiantly quoted Eisenhower's famous campaign slogan, "I like Ike".[2]
After Jürgen Voller captured the Antikythera in 1969, a captive Indiana Jones suggested that Voller was planning to go back in time to kill a prominent Allied figure like "Ike" or Winston Churchill so the Nazis might win World War II. However, Voller revealed that he actually planned to kill Adolf Hitler, whom he blamed for the Nazi defeat.[3]
