E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (or simply E.T.) is a 1982 science-fiction film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. It tells the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial he names "E.T." who has been stranded on Earth.
In addition to Spielberg directing, the film was produced by Indiana Jones alum Kathleen Kennedy. Additional crew included Frank Marshall providing production management, John Williams composing the film's score, sound design by Ben Burtt and visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic. Harrison Ford had filmed a part as the school principal, but the scene was cut from the final film.
9-year-old Henry Thomas, who landed the lead role of Elliott, arrived at his audition in an Indiana Jones costume to show the director how much of a fan he was of his previous film Raiders of the Lost Ark.
