Elias Stadiatos was a sponge diver.
Biography[]
It was while diving off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900 that Elias Stadiatos found the shipwreck where an Ancient Greek mechanism was discovered.[1]
The find would inspire Italy Fascists to go in search of more devices thirty-seven years later which were instrumental in finding a treasure trove looted by the Romans.[1]
Through unknown means, by 1944, Elias Stadiatos no longer had the Antikythera Mechanism's half he had found in the Aegean Sea, instead the half being in possession of Doctor Jürgen Voller, who had collected the mechanism with the Nazis, hoping to give it to Colonel Weber for Adolf Hitler towards the end of World War II,[2]
Behind the scenes[]
Indiana Jones Comic 6 credits Elias Stadiatos with finding the Antikythera Mechanism itself in 1900.[1] Athough Stadiatos did indeed find the artifact-filled Roman shipwreck, the discovery of the Mechanism as being among the pieces did not come until later following archaeological study.
