A woman who became the grandmother of Austrian historian Doctor Elsa Schneider lived in Austria with her granddaughter prior to 1938, always cooking delicious food for the two of them.

Biography[]

In 1938, upon approaching Castle Grunwald to rescue Professor Henry Walton Jones, Senior, Austrian historian Doctor Elsa Schneider recalled to the American archaeologist Indiana Jones, Henry's son, about how she was raised near the castle and how her grandmother often cooked some wonderful Palatschinken for breakfast, Leberknödelsuppe for lunch and maybe a nice Zwiebelrostbraten or a little Schwammerin Gebacken for dinner.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The mention of Elsa Schneider's grandmother was originally part of the third revision of Jeffrey Boam's script for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[1] Although Tom Stoppard retained many of Boam's ideas in the final script, the mention of Elsa's grandmother (and by extension her childhood) didn't make it into the shooting script.[2]
