Emil Marko was a New York City crime boss.

Biography[]

New York City crime boss Emil Marko lived on a Hudson River estate which was fronted by the "Society of Friends of Italian Opera". The gangster himself was a passionate fan of opera with an original wax recording of Enrico Caruso singing La Traviata among his prized possessions.

In 1936, Marko was suspected of trying to kill Marion Ravenwood and prevent the opening of her new Manhattan nightclub The Raven's Nest after she rebuffed his desire to use it into as a front for a gambling den. Indiana Jones eventually discovered that Marko had simply moved on from taking over The Raven's Nest and found the real culprit in Jamal, the nightclub's decorator.

Behind the scenes[]

The "Friends of Italian Opera" was a front for organized crime in the movie Some Like It Hot. Marko's estate may be a reference to the film's mobsters.
