Ettore was a man living in a village near the Italian Alps with his mother and wife, whom he married over the objections of his mother. He also had a daughter, Giulietta, and a younger son, Umberto.
Ettore played the cello, along with Giulietta who played the piano. He was well aware of his daughter courting two young men, Indiana Jones and Ernest Hemingway, during 1917. He invited Hemingway to Giulietta's birthday dinner that, but was surprised and dismayed to learn that his wife had also invited Jones and feared for his family's honor. Ultimately, however, Ettore was to become father-in-law of Alfredo.
