The Eye of Azrael was an artifact sought out by the Nazis simply because agents in Washington DC had discovered Indiana Jones had been asked to find it. Launching several digs to locate it, the Eye of Azrael was actually stolen out from under them by Jones who escaped with the relic when given chase.

The Eye of Azrael was created for the introductory story of The World of Indiana Jones. Azrael is the angel of death and one of the four main archangels in Islam.
