A Nazi soldier participated during the Reich's effort to find the Holy Grail in 1938. He served under the orders of Colonel Ernst Vogel and became the first of three Nazis to be felled by one bullet fired by Indiana Jones.

Biography[]

In 1938, during the Nazi effort to find the Holy Grail, this German soldier served under the command of Colonel Ernst Vogel.[1]

Upon the arrival of the Nazis at the Republic of Hatay, the soldier traveled on one of the trucks driven during the journey to the Temple of the Sun. When the American archaeologist Indiana Jones appeared on the scene to rescue his father Henry Walton Jones, Senior and his friend Marcus Brody from Vogel, who had taken them as hostages inside his tank, the soldier along with his companions were called on by their superior to take the fight to Jones.[1]

Determined to help, the soldier jumped from the truck and attacked, rolling with Jones to the back of the tank, which earned him a punch from Jones, losing his cab to the tank's tread. His teammates went on to assist him[1] as the soldier got deprived of his gun by Jones and prepared to shove him off the tank,[2] but once two of his teammates lined up behind him, the Nazi was punched by Indy once again and was shot by him in the chest, killing him and his teammates with one bullet. His body subsequently fell from the tank to the desert ground.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Last Crusade fight scene of the soldier was included on the fourth issue cover for Fate of Atlantis comic book adaptation.

The first one shot, three kills Nazi was portrayed uncredited by the late stuntman Martin Grace in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[1] He had previously played a Nazi soldier during the Desert Chase in Raiders of the Lost Ark.[3]

During the early development of the film's script, written by Jeffrey Boam, additional Nazis to fight against Indiana Jones were absent with only Walter Chandler (Walter Donovan in the final film) and the Hatay Tank Driver present.[4]

The Last Crusade fight scene of the soldier was included on the book cover for Hollow Earth.

In Rob MacGregor's novelization, the soldier surprises Indy from behind after Vogel distracts him before succumbing to his movie fate, only Indy makes himself shoot through his neck.[5] In the comic book adaptation by Marvel Comics, the soldier isn't shot like his Nazi companions. Instead, Indy punches him while shooting his comrades and keeps doing so until his father distracts him by cheering him up. As the Nazi disappears after Vogel starts trying to strangle Indy, it can be assumed that the soldier was either crushed to death by the tank's tread or fell off the tank to the desert ground and survived.[6]

The shot of the soldier being punched by Indiana Jones during The Tank Chase[1] would later be used as a photo reference by Dave Dorman for the cover of Dark Horse Comics' comic book adaptation of the LucasArts' video game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis[7] and by Drew Struzan for the cover of Max McCoy's novel Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth.[8] It was even used in Hugh Fleming's 2023 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade artwork.[9]
