Francois Toussaint was a French military captain from Lyons who ultimately died during World War I.

Legacy[]

After his death, Toussaint's uniform and papers were disposed of by enemy guards in August 1916, but were retrieved by a captured Belgian soldier called Emile, who grabbed them as a disguise for himself in the knowledge that commissioned officers received better treatment in prison.

Emile was taken to a POW camp and took part in the escape attempt orchestrated there but never made it to safety. He was killed during the breakout.

Behind the scenes[]

The spelling of Toussaint's surname lies within the pages of the 1993 "Germany, Mid-August 1916" adaptation: Prisoner of War. However, the subtitles on the DVD release of the episode (as Trenches of Hell) spell the name as "Tusson".
