The GAZ 69 was a Russian automobile used by the Soviet military. In 1957 in Brazil, following Indiana Jones' escape from Colonel Dovchenko's custody and the destruction of the Jungle Cutter, Irina Spalko jumped into a GAZ 69 driven by a young Ukrainian soldier in an attempt to flee from Jones.[1]
Of the enemy vehicles used by the Soviets in the ensuing pursuit, it lasted the longest, and ultimately crashed into a gigantic nest of siafu. Although it remained intact and presumably drivable, Spalko and her driver were forced to abandon the car when the ants swarmed through the holes for the foot pedals and overtook it.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The GAZ 69 seen in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull during The Jungle Chase is anachronistic to the film's 1957 setting: the vehicle's model is from 1961. The GAZ-69 was mass-produced in the USSR from 1953 to 1975 with over 700,000 units being built and exported to other Socialist countries. Its chassis was also used for the GAZ-46.
