Professor Garrett Reed was a criminal archaeologist and rival of Indiana Jones.
Biography[]
Early career[]
Professor Garrett Reed was an archaeologist and a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, an aristocratic secret-society turned adventurers guild with a long history of unethical archaeological practices. Reed himself was known for dubious methods in carrying out his work while also being obsessed with achieving immortality.[1]
In the late 1920s, Reed led a controversial Egyptology expedition which solidified his reputation as an amoral grave-robber. In 1929, he had his membership in S.E.A. revoked by the senior Lord Henry Mystic. Reed proceeded to fund his lifestyle and expeditions through pillaging antiques from across the globe and selling them to shady museums and the criminal underworld which brought him up against rival archaeologist Indiana Jones as the two clashed over a golden idol hidden in the jungles of Peru where Jones beat Reed to the temple.[1]
Death[]
By December 8, 1932, Reed was on the lamb and travelled to a mysterious jungle where he sought out the Emerald Trinity, a collection of three enchanted emeralds said to bestow immortality to whomever was able to take them out of the jungle.[1]
Reed set up camp in the jungle and managed to claim one of the emeralds. However, the legend was a trap: upon the jewels being stolen, the jungle itself would exert magical forces to prevent their theft. Before Reed could escape, several enchanted vines entered his tent, strangled the archaeologist and forced him to the ground, killing him.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Garrett Reed is a character created for Hong Kong Disneyland's Jungle Cruise overlay Curse of the Emerald Trinity in 2015. An Indiana Jones easter egg was included as part of the backstory for the attraction where The Daily Colonial Journal reports that Reed and Jones once collided in their mutual hunt for a golden idol at a temple in Peru with Jones coming out on top,[1] a likely nod to the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark.[2]
This does create a potential continuity error within the attraction which is set in 1932, when Reed is killed,[1] as Jones notably recovers such an idol (only to lose to René Belloq soon after) during Raiders in 1936.[2] However, the idol isn't identified by name in the journal.
