The German Desert Commandos were an elite group of German soldiers sent to Sudan in 1939 to recover artifacts from the Sudan Temple, and to assist and observe Magnus Völler.
History[]
An officer with a Luger P08
In 1939, Indiana Jones encountered the German Desert Commandos in the Sudan Temple. They were well equipped, armed Luger P08s and MP-40s and even Neubaufahrzeugs, World War I-era German biplanes and Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighters. They set up a camp outside the temple.[1] There were three varieties of them;
- Grunts: They were the standard and most common troops in this unit. They wore grey uniforms with caps, black boots and red armbands. They used whatever weapons they could find like spades and metal pipes and sometimes used MP-40s but they mostly fought with their fists.[1]
- Brutes: These were physically imposing men who wore similar uniforms to the grunts but with no caps and two red armbands. They were a lot stronger than the grunts, being able to block many attacks, including Indy's whip attacks . They could still be hit if Indy dodged their attacks or hit them with weapons or other objects.[1]
- Officers: A single officer was encountered when Indy retrieved the Ram's Head Bust. He blew a hole in the temple and held Indy at gunpoint but Indy tricked the officer by getting the man to move closer then tossed the artifact to him. The officer caught the relic but nearly fell into a pit, prompting Völler to try to rescue the artifact, a distraction which allowed Jones to seal his attackers inside the temple. The officer had a green uniform with a red armband, a cap and a tie and was equipped with a Luger P08.[1]
The commandos were no match for Jones who defeated many of them as he went through their camp and took the Gold Ram's Head from them. Indy stole a World War I-era German biplane and shot down many of their planes as he flew through a canyon to freedom.[1]

The German Desert Commandos only appear in Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings for the PS2 and Wii. There is no equivalent for them on the DS or PSP as there is no section in those games that take place in Sudan.[1] The commandos are a fictional unit but likely based of the Waffen SS and the Afrika Korps.
Dirk Meyer, Christian Mey, Jens Münchow, Torsten Münchow and Michael Schernthaner provided there voices for the Commandos.
The Brutes are an obvious visual reference to the German Mechanic, both being large, imposing, German bald men who fight against Indy in the desert.[2]
The Grunts and Officers have the exact same uniforms as the German Commandos Indy encounters in the Mayan Temple in Panama. More Grunt and Officer uniforms appear in Istanbul, Nepal and the Odin later in the game as well.[1]
