A Nazi officer formed part of the German effort to locate the Ark of the Covenant at Tanis in 1936 under Colonel Herman Dietrich and French archaeologist René Emile Belloq. He watched Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir, disguised as one of the native Egyptian diggers, running by and using a Nazi flag and other materials to improvise a rope with which to free Indiana Jones from the Tanis Map Room.

Biography[]

In 1936, a Nazi officer was among the German presence stationed outside Cairo, Egypt at Tanis under Colonel Herman Dietrich and French archaeologist René Emile Belloq to search for the lost Ark of the Covenant.[1]

One day during his work, the officer was standing on guard outside a tent, surrounded by native Egyptian diggers and patrolling German soldiers, when he noticed Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir, who was disguised as one of the native slaves, running past to the tent opposite his, saluting him on the way. El-Kahir soon emerged with a Nazi flag and several other materials, with which he would improvise a rope to rescue his friend, American archaeologist Indiana Jones, from the Tanis Map Room.[1]
