Guybrush Threepwood was a visitor to Monkey Island. He was notorious for being able to hold his breath for an exceptional amount of time.[1]
Threepwood, armed with a bullwhip, a machete and a gun launching rubber chickens, was found in a barber shop that had an idol and a live monkey. Its walls were decorated with portraits of people (including Threepwood's himself).[2]
Behind the scenes[]
Guybrush Ulysses Threepwood is a character from LucasArts' Monkey Island game series where he mentions that he can hold his breath for ten minutes. Notorious for its humor, Monkey Island series has a lot of references to Indiana Jones and Star Wars.
The first game of the series, The Secret of Monkey Island, had a demo in Lucasfilm Games Passport to Adventure. In that demo, Threepwood could temporarily change into Indiana Jones if the player attempted to pick up a chalice he identifies as "the cup of a carpenter". That game also featured an almost useless and much-referenced rubber chicken.[3]
In one path of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, if Indy drowns while looking for the airlock of Atlantis, the game over screen mentions that he couldn't hold his breath as long as Threepwood.[1]
Threepwood later appeared as a playable easter egg in Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine's Aetherium level. The player is teleported to the Barbery Coast, a location from the Curse of Monkey Island, with a cue from that location's soundtrack repeated. Guybrush himself is a 3D rendering of his appearance from that game. The player can wander around its rooms and look at some portraits of behind-the-scenes people, including Steven Spielberg. There is a monkey there which the player can kill.[2]
Indiana Jones Adventure World's Easter Island Dig level references Monkey Island by quoting one of the series' running gags: "Look behind you, there's a three-headed monkey!"[4]
