Ham was one of the sons of Noah and a survivor of the Great Flood during humanity's prehistory.
Biography[]
Repopulating the world[]
According to legend, Ham and his brothers used seventeen stones crafted by the Metatron, an angel acting as the Voice of God, to return the animals that their sire Noah had collected aboard an ark to spare them from the Great Flood generated by the divine creator to cleanse the Earth. After the waters had subsided, Noah's children travelled along the Great Circle, a journey that begat mankind's civilizations and, in an effort to avoid another cataclysm, hid each stone at a different site around the globe.[1]
Legacy[]
The Bible would eventually recount Noah's story in the book of Genesis, which included a passage that saw Noah, in a moment of rage, condemning Ham and all of his children to be servants for all time. This later led to some in the American South to use the account as justification for the enslavement of people based on their skin color, claiming that as Noah's grandchildren eventually settled in Africa and gave birth to Africans, their black skin marked them as being born to be slaves.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
Ham was first referenced in relation to the Indiana Jones world through the From Slavery to Freedom companion historical documentary, which included an illustration of him for Kevin Bales' explanation of how the Biblical legend of Ham was linked to slavery.[2] He was briefly depicted later in fiction through the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle video game when it was updated to include further material, a narration by Locus, to accompany the original ending which tells of how Noah's Ark saved the Earth's animal species.[1]
