Hans Beitelheimer was a painter and the husband of Loraine Beitelheimer, the goddaughter of Marcus Brody. After the death of his wife in an accident, he moved to Chiloé Island, in southern Chile, resumed painting and began working with people from the interior world. Beitelheimer was tall and blond with pale blue eyes.
Biography[]
In his younger years, Beitelheimer met Loraine, goddaughter to Marcus Brody, at an art school in Switzerland and married her. Six years later, she was killed in a landslide while skiing. Distraught, Beitelheimer moved as far away as he could, and eventually ended up living on Chiloé Island, under the name of "Juan Barrios".[1]
Telling few people his real name, Barrios started painting pictures, which tended to follow mythical and supernatural themes, such as witches and mermaids. He gave many of these images as well as a self-portrait to his friend Jorge Fernandez, initialing them as J. B. After painting one of the ghost ship Caleuche and giving it to Fernandez for his new restaurant, Caleuche, he started to feel that his thoughts were being haunted. Eventually he took Fernandez to see the real ghost ship. He kept in correspondence with Marcus Brody, but mysteriously stopped two or three years before 1929. In this time, Beitelheimer had joined the crew of the Caleuche and had become the messenger between Maleiwa and Adolf Hitler. But instead of bringing Hitler to the interior world, he fled into the Chiloé forests.[1]
In early 1929, Beitelheimer sent Brody a telegram requesting his help, saying "he was trapped in a legend, and didn't know if he could get out alive." At some point around this time, Beitelheimer had met up with a fellow ship crewmember named Teotoro, and told him that he had seen Loraine, and would join her soon.[1]
In June, Beitelheimer learned that Brody and Indiana Jones had arrived on the island and were searching for him in Ancud. He arrived in the market square, and was spotted, but there was also a doppelganger with a hat in the crowd, and Brody and Jones got baffled. Beitelheimer got kidnapped in the street, injuring his hand, an event was witnessed by Antonio.[1]
That evening, Beitelheimer was chained outside a shed at Antonio's house near Chonchi, and paced outside the door. Thinking that he was guarding the door, Indiana Jones and a dog attacked him. Losing his club, he fell to Jones' blows and then the dog viciously ripped out his throat. Jones noticed the chain but fearing the dog, freed the double from the shed. Antonio realized that the real Beitelheimer had been killed by the dog, because that one had a bandaged hand from the kidnapping. Later it was revealed that the fake was Sacho, using his ability to give people the illusion they were seeing someone else.[1]
Personality and traits[]
Marcus Brody remarked that Beitelheimer could be rather dramatic and overreact to situations.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Hans Beitelheimer was created by author Rob MacGregor for Indiana Jones and the Interior World as the husband of Marcus Brody's goddaughter Loraine.[1] The World of Indiana Jones later referenced Beitelheimer as the brother-in-law of Brody,[2] a detail repeated in Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Guide.[3]
