The Hatay Tank Gunner was one of several soldiers given to Walter Donovan by the Sultan of Hatay for his quest to find the Holy Grail in 1938.

Biography

He manned the gun inside of the tank commanded by Colonel Vogel. He made several attempts to shoot and kill Indiana Jones. He himself wound up being killed when Jones jammed the barrel of the gun with a rock. When the gunner fired, the blockage resulted in an explosive backfire that killed him instantly. His body was subsequently carried over a cliff with the entire tank and Vogel.

Behind the scenes

The tank gunner was played by Stefan Kalipha in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Neither he nor the tank's driver appear in Rob MacGregor's novelization or the comic book as such. There, the tank's crew are (apparently) all German.

None of the tank's crew appear in LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures and its sequel. Instead, Vogel appears to control the entire tank in both games.
