The Hebrews were a Semitic cultural group of the Near East, and the ancestors of the Israelites, who recorded the history and theology of the Hebrews in the Hebrew Bible, which incorporates the holy texts of Judaism, and form a part of the holy texts of Christianity. Often, the term Israelite and Hebrew are interchangeable in this context as a reference to this ancient group. The term Hebrew is also the name of the language spoken by the ancient Israelites as well as modern Jews and Israelis.
The ancient Hebrews were divided into twelve tribes, based on family lineage. After the Exodus from Egypt and the introduction of the Ten Commandments by Moses, they settled in Canaan, centered around the main city of Jerusalem. They stored the tablets of the Ten Commandments in the Ark of the Covenant at the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Later, the Ark was captured by the Egyptian pharaoh Shishak in 980 BC, and taken to Tanis, which was later buried in a year-long sandstorm.
Eventually, the Israelites established a series of monarchies before being captured and exiled by the Babylonians, after 600 BC. A half century later, the Israelites were allowed to return and rebuild their lands after the Persians conquered the Babylonians.
