"Them! They are after the Jastro pieces! They will kill anyone in their way—as they very nearly killed me!"

Hector Uribe, discussing Klaus Kerner and his band of Nazis[src]

Doctor Hector Uribe was a scholar who lived in Cadiz, Spain, and an expert in the legend of Atlantis. In 1939, his collection of books and artifacts relating to the lost city, some of them bought from the Jastro Expedition, made him a target of a Nazi team. Colonel Klaus Kerner, who visited him as a scientist to study the artifacts, then shot him in the shoulder and stole almost everything of value.

Afterward, Uribe telegraphed Marcus Brody, who met him in Cadiz. There, after introducing Brody to his daughter, Conchita, he felt weak and lay down to rest. Conchita entrusted the curator with a small artifact from the Jastro dig that had been overlooked by the Nazis. As she was making advances towards Brody, she was interrupted by Hector who brought to him an urgent telegram from Barnett College. Brody then left for Leningrad.
