Hermes to the ancient Greeks and Mercury in the Roman pantheon, was the god of trade and communications. As well as the protector of travellers, Hermes acted as the messenger of the gods.

Behind the scenes[]
In Greek mythology, Hermes was the god of trade, roads and orators. The son of Zeus and the goddess Maia, he acted as the messenger of Olympus and guided the souls of the dead to the underworld. Easily identifiable by his winged sandals and hat, and for carrying a winged staff, Hermes played an important in several Greek myths. For example, he gave Perseus winged shoes to help travel to Medusa's lair and protected Odysseus during his journeys.
