Hernando Cortés (or Hernán Cortés) was a Spanish conquistador.

Biography[]

Hernando Cortés was born in 1485 in Medellín, Spain. When he was seven years old, Cortés started hearing European stories at his country and Portugal about a rich land in the west after Christopher Columbus reached America's coast.[1]

With just eighteen years old, Cortés first sailed to America in 1504. In August 1519, Cortés led a small Spanish army in Mexico,[1] landing near what is now Veracruz.[2]

In 1520, Cortés gave a jewel-encrusted golden crucifix to fellow Spanish explorer, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado. This crucifix, the Cross of Coronado, was proof that Cortés sent Coronado in search of the Seven Cities of Gold.[3]

Cortés died in 1547 in his country. In 1567, his body was brought from Spain to Mexico and buried in the chatedral build from the stones of the Aztec's Great Temple.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

In 1520, the real Cortés was in Mexico leading the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs while Francisco Vásquez de Coronado would have been a child of 10 or 11 back in Spain at the time, a situation which would have made it difficult for Coronado to receive the cross from Cortés, especially in person.
