According to High Priest and King Nur-Ab-Sal, great horned beings visited Atlantis from the Earth's sky.[1]
They gave his people the secret of orichalcum and other technology which led the Atlanteans to believe the horned beings were deities and they left a significant legacy on Atlantean culture as many of the city's machines, figures and statues contained horn imagery. With their fantastic tech, the Atlanteans were able to establish a kingdom of their own and conquer several nearby kingdoms, forming an empire.[1]
One day, however, the beings vanished as suddenly as they had appeared. Desperate to replace them after their mighty city sunk due to a volcanic eruption, the Atlanteans used their scavenged technology to build a machine to achieve godhood but their efforts were horrifyingly not successful, instead deformingly mutating themselves into sub-humans abominations far from god-like beings, culminating in the Atlanteans bringing their own downfall upon themselves.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Flashbacks in the Dark Horse Comics' comic book adaptation of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis depict the horned beings as wearing space suits and entering a flying ship, all but stating that they were actually extraterrestrial visitors. It is implied that the God Machine was doomed to failure due to the Atlanteans' lack of understanding of the alien physiology.[1] The existence of the horned beings and their unearthly origin are never confirmed in the game itself, even though the beings receive an indirect mention.[2] Their appearance in the comic resembles those of the Gamorrean race, horned pig-like aliens which appeared in the Star Wars franchise.
Likely a coincidence, the depiction of the interdimensional beings of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull[3] is similar in premise to that of the horned beings in the Fate of Atlantis comic adaptation. Much like the horned beings,[1] the interdimensional beings played a role in the development of an ancient culture that led to them raising a city in their honor and once they achieve what they came to do to the Earth, they depart in their ships leaving without a trace.[3]
