Indiana Jones: "Too bad the Hovitos... don't know you the way I do, Belloq."
René Belloq: "Yes, too bad. You could warn them, if only you spoke Hovitos."
―Indiana and Belloq confronting with the Hovitos.[src]

Hovitos was the obscure language spoken by the Hovitos tribes[1] in a secluded valley in the jungle highlands of Chachapoyas, Peru.[2] By 1936[3] René Emile Belloq had struck an allegiance with the Hovitos, due to his mastery of their language.[1] After Indiana Jones menaged to gain the Chachapoyan Fertility Idol, he lost it to Belloq who he used to snap off with Hovitos in their tongue. As Indy escaped,[3] he ordered them to kill him.[4]

William Smyth-Kelley knew to speak Hovitos language.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

In Raiders of the Lost Ark Belloq simply orders to kill Indiana Jones by mimicking cutting his throat with his hand,[3] but in the novelization and the comic adaptation he actually orders them to kill him in Hovitos.[5][4]
