Imperial German Army

The Imperial German Army, officially referred to as the German Army (German: Deutsches Heer), was the ground and air force of the German Empire. The Imperial German Navy was its own separate military branch.

Created in 1871 after the Prussian Army won the Franco-Prussian War, the Imperial German Army served during World War I from 1914 to 1918, after which it became the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic in 1919 before being reorganized as the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany in 1935. The Luftstreitkräfte was the air force while the Schutztruppe were the colonial troops and were considered part of the army. The colonial troops in Africa became known as the Askari.

Indiana Jones and his friend Remy had numerous encounters with it's soldiers during his service in World War I.

History[]

In 1916, Indy, while part of the 9th Belgian Infantry, fought many German soldiers on the Western front. He fought them during the Battle of the Somme where they were able to capture him.[1] He escaped their captivity in August.[1] He fought them again during the Battle of Verdun where he discovered the existence of large German cannons called Big Bertha.[2] This was also around the time when he encountered the Luftstreitkräfte for the first time in the form of Herman Göring's biplane.[2]

In late 1916, Indy joined the Force Publique in Africa to escape the horrors of the trenches. Indy fought against the Askari, destroying a large train they were using to shell British lines.[3] He also charged some of their trenches in December, battling a German Major and Lieutenant Schwinden[4]

In 1917, Indy joined the French Secret Service were he became a photographer for the Lafayette Escadrille. He embarked many dangerous airborne reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines fighting against the Luftstreitkräfte. He also had run-in with German Ace Manfred von Richthofen.[5]

In May 1917, he encountered German spies and officers in Barcelona, Spain.[6]

In October 1917, he fought against a German officer named Schiller who was helping the Ottoman Empire during the Battle of Beersheba. Indy defeated Schiller as he attempted to destroy the Well of Abraham.[7]

Late in the war, Indy defeated Imperial German Agents as they attempted to purchase secret technologies in Lhasa, Bombay, London and Cairo. After he stopped the deals, he was tasked with infiltrating a Prototype Zeppelin and destroying it.[8]

On the day World War I ended, Indy had an encounter with a German soldier named Zyke who was searching for the Peacock's Eye. Indy and Remy followed him around the world, hoping the diamond could enrich them. Zyke was killed by one of his own co-conspirators and Indy would end up giving up the search after having a conversation with Bronislaw Malinowski.[9]
