Indiana Jones Wiki

The International Settlement was originally a British concession built in Shanghai, China, one of the original five treaty ports established under the terms of the Treaty of Nanking at the end of the First Opium War (18391842).[4][1]

An American enclave was later established to the north of the British concession and 1849 saw France given a similar grant of land to the south. The British and American concessions eventually merged to form the International Settlemment.[1]

History[]

Wu Han, a friend of archaeologist Indiana Jones, bought a small house for himself in the International Settlement. Wu Han later let an orphaned boy called Short Round, whom Jones had found and Short Round's fellow urchins, live at his house in the settlement.[1]

Although the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Sourcebook covers the merger of the British and American concessions, the book's map of the Old International Settlement of Shanghai, China is somewhat misleading as it implies that the area was formed of the British and French land instead. Historically, the settlement collapsed upon the city's occupation by Japanese forces during World War II and Chiang Kai-Shek formally ended China's arrangement with the Allied nations.
