J. Edgar Hoover was the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and was instrumental in the development and direction of the Bureau, turning the the small Bureau of Investigations into a major law enforcement agency, focusing on criminal investigations and domestic intelligence.
During the 1950's, his name was synonymous with the FBI and its investigations into un-American activities, like Communism.[1]
