Jan Christiaan Smuts was an Afrikaner of Dutch descent who served as a British general during World War I.
Biography[]
In 1916, Jan Smuts' company was pinned down on a beach by a German secret weapon which prevented him from taking Morogoro.

Behind the scenes[]
Following the war, Smuts went on to serve as prime minister of South Africa from 1919 until 1924.
